What PAX Gold actually is
PAX Gold is a digital token issued by Paxos Trust Company, N.A., a US national trust bank supervised by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency since December 2025. Each token represents ownership of one fine troy ounce of gold, about 31.1 grams, held as part of a London Good Delivery bar in professional vaults in London. When you hold 0.25 PAXG, you own a quarter of an ounce of specific, allocated metal, not a promise to pay you the gold price.
The token itself is an ERC-20 contract on Ethereum, and since June 2026 Paxos also issues it natively on Solana. That gives gold something it never had in a bank vault: it settles in minutes, trades on weekends and fits into ordinary crypto wallets. You can read the full explanation in our guide to what PAX Gold is and how it works.
The price follows gold because new tokens are only created when Paxos receives payment for metal, and tokens can be redeemed for gold or cash through a Paxos account. If PAXG drifts too far from spot, professional traders mint or redeem and close the gap. Small premiums and discounts still appear, especially on weekends when the gold market is shut, which is why our live widget shows the gap to spot.

Gold’s safety, with the speed of a token
For centuries, owning gold meant a choice between two inconveniences. You could keep coins at home and worry about theft and resale spreads, or buy a fund share that tracks gold but never gives you title to a specific bar. PAX Gold sits in between. The metal is professionally vaulted in London, yet the claim on it travels like a message.
That matters most where moving money is slow or expensive. A saver in Istanbul can hold gold against a weak lira without carrying coins. A trader in Seoul can react to a Saturday headline while the London market is closed. A family office can post PAXG as collateral and get it back the same day. None of this makes gold less volatile, but it removes a lot of friction around it.
How to buy PAX Gold in four steps
The details depend on your country and currency. Our step-by-step buying guide covers payment methods, fees and the mistakes we see most often.
Pick a venue that lists PAXG
Global exchanges mostly offer PAXG/USDT. Some local exchanges quote it in lira, baht, rupiah, złoty, reais, won or rupees. Compare them on our PAXG exchanges page.
Verify your identity
Every regulated venue asks for ID and proof of address. It usually takes minutes, sometimes a day.
Fund the account and buy
Pay by card, bank transfer or a local rail such as Pix or UPI, then buy as little as a few dollars of PAXG.
Decide where to keep it
Leave it on the exchange for convenience or withdraw it on Ethereum or Solana to a wallet you control. Our Ledger guide walks through it.

PAX Gold in your country
Rules, taxes and the best local route to PAXG differ a lot. A Thai saver can buy it in baht on a licensed exchange; a German buyer runs into the EU gap. Pick your market.

PAXG next to the other ways to own gold
The closest rival is Tether Gold (XAUT), which is larger by market value but is issued from El Salvador, stores its gold in Switzerland and publishes attestations quarterly rather than monthly. PAX Gold comes from a US federally chartered trust bank and reports every month. Which matters more to you, scale or supervision, decides the choice. Our PAXG vs XAUT comparison goes line by line.
Against a gold ETF such as SPDR Gold Shares, PAXG trades around the clock and charges no annual management fee, while the ETF trades in brokerage hours and charges 0.40% a year. Against bars in a safe, PAXG saves you dealer spreads and storage worries but adds issuer and smart-contract risk. We weigh these trade-offs honestly in PAXG vs physical gold and ETFs.
| Ownership | Trading hours | Ongoing cost | |
|---|---|---|---|
| PAX Gold | Allocated LGD bar share | 24/7 | No storage fee |
| Tether Gold | Allocated gold, Swiss vault | 24/7 | No storage fee |
| Gold ETF (GLD) | Fund shares | Market hours | 0.40% a year |
| Bars at home | Direct, physical | Dealer hours | Insurance, safe, spread |

What can go wrong
PAXG is only as good as its issuer, its custodians and the code. Paxos can freeze tokens and upgrade the contract, and it has faced regulatory action over other products. Read the risks before you buy.
We like PAX Gold for what it is, but we don’t pretend it is risk-free. Your claim depends on Paxos keeping the gold properly allocated and on the custodians keeping it safe. Monthly attestations by KPMG LLP compare token supply with the ounces held, which is reassuring, yet an attestation is narrower than a full financial audit. The contract has administrative powers: Paxos can freeze an address, wipe frozen balances and pause transfers, which helps against theft but also means the token is not censorship-resistant.
Regulation is another moving part. Paxos says PAXG is currently unavailable in the EU, even though some European venues still list it for trading, and several of the countries we cover are rewriting their crypto laws in 2026. Then there is plain market risk: gold reached a record near $5,500 an ounce in January 2026 and then fell back sharply, so a gold token can lose close to a quarter of its value in a few months. Our PAX Gold safety review goes through each risk and how to reduce it.
If you want to go deeper, start with where the gold is kept, then the full fee schedule, and check the official contract address before you send a single token. For a sense of where the price could go, our PAX Gold price prediction page lays out the forecasts and scenarios without pretending anyone knows.
Independent research, dated and sourced
paxgold.finance is not the official PAX Gold site and is not affiliated with Paxos. We are a small editorial team that follows tokenized gold closely. Every fee, licence and date on these pages links back to the issuer, a regulator or an exchange’s own documentation, with the date we checked it. Where we could not confirm something, we say so instead of filling the gap.
Live prices come from public market data loaded in your browser, never from numbers typed into the page. When we recommend a venue, we explain why and where its limits are, including where it is not available. Read our editorial policy or get in touch if you spot something out of date.
Questions people ask
What is PAX Gold (PAXG)?
PAX Gold is a token issued by Paxos Trust Company, N.A. Each PAXG represents one fine troy ounce of a London Good Delivery gold bar held in LBMA vaults in London, and it moves on the Ethereum and Solana blockchains like any other token.
Is PAX Gold a stablecoin?
Not in the usual sense. It is stable against gold, not against the dollar, so its dollar price rises and falls with the gold price. It is better described as a tokenized commodity or gold-backed token.
Can I buy less than one PAXG?
Yes. PAXG divides into 18 decimal places, and exchanges usually let you buy a few dollars’ worth. You own the matching fraction of an ounce of allocated gold.
Can I swap PAXG for physical gold?
Yes, through a verified Paxos account, but physical redemption works in whole London Good Delivery bars of roughly 430 ounces, delivered in London. Most holders exit by selling PAXG on an exchange instead.
Is this the official PAX Gold website?
No. paxgold.finance is an independent review and research site. The official issuer site is paxos.com. We are not affiliated with Paxos Trust Company, and nothing here is financial advice.
